  • New Concepts in Extended Cruising With Electric Power

It is time to rethink the role of the electric boat. We all know that electric power is quiet, economical to operate and environmentally friendly both locally and globally. Although ideal for short excursions and entertaining friends, they can now be used for longer cruises. Efficient hulls with weight capacity for batteries and new motor technologies provide range and capabilities beyond those of traditional electric boats. Why not add a cabin for more time on the water and you have a new paradigm for cruising fun on the water. Economical construction makes these boats available at a fraction of the expensive production boats. Hull kits are available for amateur or professional construction. Do you need any more reasons than this...read on!

We have a number of boats that are ideally suited to electric power including:

  • Electric 15
  • Launch
  • Redwing 18
  • Launch/Cruiser
  • Redwing 21
  • Launch/Cruiser
  • Redwing 40
  • Hybrid/Cruiser
  • Aurora 40
  • Hybrid/Cruiser

  • ELECTRIC 15 is powered by a trolling motor and is an easy to build boat for entry into the fun of electric boating.

  • REDWING 18 has a new electric option. It is an economically built boat with an efficient hull form and is ideally suited for the latest technology in electric outboard propulsion. The new motor technology will power the REDWING 18 up to 5 knots or more, with 3.5 to 4 knots more economical creek crawling speed. Weight capacity for two banks of batteries provide over 24 hours of economical cruising. This combined with an easily trailering capability, and you have unlimited cruising capability in areas like the Chesapeake Bay, intracoastal waterways and canals. Add a few solar panels and the possibilities get even better. The cabin is suitable for camp cruising and private facilities for mixed crews and extended outings, a feature not available on any other electric boat in her size.

  • REDWING 21 - Other power options for the Redwing series include inboard, outboard, or trolling motor and gas outboard hybrid. The redwing series has capacity for a considerable size bank of batteries with a speed and range capability not seen in current electric boats. We have a new cruising version of the REDWING 21 with solar panels on a fixed canopy. These electric versions are suitable for personal use and commercial eco-tours in environmentally sensitive areas. The cabins are suitable for cruising, a place to get out of the weather and private facilities for mixed crews and extended outings.

  • REDWING 40 and REDWING 40LR have a new powering option made possible by the latest technology in electric power. Podded propulsion with 180 degree thrust and a bow thruster produce unparalleled maneuverability. The heart of the propulsion package is a new DC generator that is efficient at any power setting. The DC generator runs at variable load and rpm to produce DC electricity more efficiently than the constant rpm AC generator. This integrated electric power system provides DC driven air conditioning, primary propulsion, bow thruster or house loads as demand requires with one size generator. Battery back up and an inverter will provide AC electrical loads without need for another generator. This technology produces an integrated electric system that is more efficient that individual power systems common on yachts today.

  • AURORA 40 - We have been working on a hybrid version of the AURORA 40 as an electric yacht. The same new integrated DC powering system mentioned above for the REDWING 40 can be used effectively on the AURORA 40. This is pure class in a very quiet economical cruising package. Electric power allows full sound and vibration isolation for extremely quiet operation. We are also involved in the application of new fuel cell technology in marine applications. Range and efficiency are greatly improved with the new exciting technology.

Chesapeake Marine Design will be help you with specific requirements in electric boat and electric system design. We have hull kits for each of these designs. Whether you build yourself or have a boat built professionally; you will save considerable construction time.
